Screen Sharing and VNC

Use the macOS desktop through an SSH tunnel when the work needs a screen.

The desktop is not exposed to the internet. You reach it by forwarding the Screen Sharing port over your SSH connection.

Open the tunnel

  1. 1Start a tunnel from a free local port to port 5900 on the Mac.
  2. 2Leave that terminal open.
  3. 3Point your viewer at the local port.

ssh -N -L 5901:localhost:5900 -p PORT USER@HOST

Connect a viewer

open vnc://localhost:5901

Sign in with the macOS user name from your booking page. The first time, set a desktop password over SSH with passwd; it is erased with the disk when the term ends.
